Hubble Telescope

There has been a desire to explore the stars and the distant reaches of the galaxy ever since we were able to see the other planets of our solar system. Ever since Galileo invented and proved the power of the telescope, the quest for knowledge has put a greater and greater demand on the improvement of telescope technology and new conceptions of how to achieve photographic representations of space; it is not conceivable for astronomers and other scientists to continue to try to view heavenly bodies with starter telescopes. Many large optical telescopes have been established for use by research teams in locations amenable for astronomical viewings. Places like Hawaii, Chile and the Canary Islands are territories on which multiple high-powered telescopes reside and are used on a regular basis. However, while research stations on our planet are continuing to be improved and records for the size of the largest telescope ever created, even the tethering of a telescope to the Earth may be limiting. That is part of the allure and functionality of the Hubble Telescope, also known as the Hubble Space Telescope, and named after Edwin P. Hubble, a groundbreaking theorist in the field of astronomy whose work is commemorated by his namesake law and the Hubble constant.

Momentum for the creation of the Hubble Telescope first gathered with the observations of Mr. Hubble. Contradicting the belief that all that could be observed of our universe by man was the Milky Way Galaxy, Hubble used his telescope from a location in California to view other distant galaxies, noticing their behavior. He observed that these distant galaxies were constantly expanding, and thus, as the whole, the universe is expanding. Obviously, further theory and research on the laws and processes that defined the very universe itself were needed to be approached. However, various scientists saw limitations to the use of observatories from fixed positions on the Earth’s surface. Even in locations where interference from pollution and city lights was limited, the gases and dust present in the atmosphere that protect the entire planet also obscure our view of extraterrestrial space and, in some cases, block out types of energy completely.

Thus, the necessity for a mechanism outside of Earth’s atmospheric levels was apparent. It would be a process of innovation before the Hubble Telescope would finally be realized. The workings of the Space Race certainly paved the way for the creation of the Hubble Telescope, as Sputnik proved to be the forerunner for all forays of manned and unmanned space exploration in the decades to come, and future developments such as the space shuttle would provide the capability for transporting materials for construction and repairs of a space telescope where previous methods would have proved insufficient. With the cooperation of NASA, a national institute for the creation of a space telescope was founder. Their creation was renamed at a point in time to capture the spirit of innovation that Edwin Hubble promoted. The Hubble Telescope was launched in 1990, and to this day, is responsible for the capture of long-range telescopic images and the study of new worlds and forms of energy.

Space Shuttle Program

While many instances of NASA launch may be immediately memorable to the American citizen who has lived through the Space Race and into the modern age, one of the most prominent would have to be the Apollo missions designed for lunar landing and analysis. However, in terms of being a space shuttle launch, to insist that, say, the Apollo 13 mission was just that would be to commit an error. While we might think the terms interchangeable after almost 30 years of manned space shuttle launch events – after all, time may cause one to forget – not every rocket launched by NASA has been a space shuttle. In fact, the first manned space shuttle did not take off until the 1980′s, well after Neil Armstrong’s world-famous romp on the surface of the moon. The space shuttle program is merely a subcategory of the general NASA launch heading.

Including non-operational flights, the space shuttle program has been in gear for even longer than 30 years. Using the Enterprise model of orbiter, tests were conducted in the late 70′s to get a feel for how the space shuttle performed when attached to a space shuttle carrier and later in missions of free flight. It was not until the premiere space shuttle launch of the Columbia class in 1981 that an actual NASA launch of a space shuttle with engines (and thus the physical ability to leave Earth’s atmosphere) was realized. Since that beginning, over 100 space shuttle launches have been tallied by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The missions have had a variety of durations. Of course, some barely got off the ground and some never made it back to the Earth, in the case of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, respectively, but others have lasted close to a fortnight or longer.

Just as soon as some of us are becoming familiar with the idea that the space shuttle program has not been in place since the start of manned missions to space, we must look ahead to a new brand of NASA launch and new challenges. While it may have garnered the attention of some, it is likely unknown by a majority of Americans that the space shuttle launch program will be ending after 2010. The last space shuttle launch is scheduled to take place in September of this year; of course, the actual date is subject to change as mechanical errors and weather conditions incompatible for flight can delay the time of launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The purpose of these remaining flights essentially is to provides modules and other materials to add to the International Space Station until shortly before its scheduled completion. Going forward, as noted, this will not be the end of the NASA launch. New manned spacecraft are envisioned to coincide with new destinations such as Mars and new missions, namely colonization attempts.

The space shuttle program, meanwhile, will continue to be remembered. While the disasters of 1986 and 2003 may stick out like sore thumbs, the image of the space shuttle with all its components is an enduring one.

Astronaut

Children are often asked, as part of an assembly or by their teachers, what they want to be when they grow up. For a lot of kids, this may be an attractive job based on perceived importance and heroism such as firefighter or police officer, or something cued in their minds from their everyday lives, such as teacher, school nurse, or whatever job their parent does. Few occupations, however, capture the majesty and elite status of being an astronaut, which makes the career path all the more appealing to youths. Astronauts like John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, even though exact their exact roles in American aeronautic history may not be known to all, are still famous and synonymous with space travel. Even if one is not first to orbit the Earth or set foot on the moon’s surface, to be an astronaut is to be part of a very select few. Only a handful of people, in relative terms, can say they were astronauts, that they shot away from the Earth in a rocket and went beyond the stratosphere.

While the cost of sending men and women into space in expensive spacecraft is a limiting factor in itself, the fact that the process to become a space explorer is a rigorous one also helps to protect their vaunted distinction. Simply put, qualified astronauts are not easy to come by. One major reason for this is the selection process to become an astronaut. In a given two-year period, a maximum of 25 people will be both nominated and selected by an appointed committee to serve as astronauts on the behalf of the American people. Aside from any previous flight experience (and a significant number of hours will be required for pilots), the applicant must have a degree in a biological or physical science, mathematics or engineering, and must past any and all physical medical examinations.

The hard work and preparation is far from over upon acceptance to an astronaut training program, though. There are a battery of tests awaiting the applicant. First, a year of general training must be completed by those who strive to become astronauts. This is succeeded by a period of basic classroom training in various scientific disciplines, as well as any fields of study germane to the mission; e.g. Apollo mission teams were required to learn additionally about the structure of the moon. Also, the applicant must endure several kinds of physical training. All applicants who plan to participate in space flight must additionally undergo flight training, survival training in the event of an unanticipated landing, basic mission training including weightlessness training, and advanced mission training in a mission simulator.

Only after mastery of all of the above on the checklist can candidates be considered to become astronauts.
